Thaxted Festival is held over four weekends in June / July each year in the spacious and inspiring setting of the medieval Parish Church, at the centre of the historic town of Thaxted, Essex, England.
The 2016 Thaxted Festival will run from Friday 24 June to Sunday 17 July. Planning is well underway, and the programme for the season (with full booking details) will be announced early in 2016.
2016 marks the centenary of the first concerts to be held in Thaxted Parish Church. The composer Gustav Holst was associated with Thaxted from 1914, and first organised concerts in the church at Whitsuntide 1916.
He and fellow composer Ralph Vaughan Williams did much to encourage music-making in the town over subsequent years, with the later involvement of Holst's daughter Imogen.
Our 2016 programme will celebrate Thaxted's links with Gustav Holst and his founding events, while continuing to offer the diversity of performance for which the modern Festival is celebrated.
Since its re-founding in 1980, Thaxted Festival has attracted the very best of British and international musicians, in genres ranging from orchestral, chamber and vocal music to jazz, folk, big-band and popular standards, from early music to contemporary compositions.
Events for younger audiences, and educational projects with local schools, form an important part of the Festival's activity.
Our audiences and performers enjoy the superb acoustics and uplifting architecture of Thaxted's spacious Parish Church, which dates from the fourteenth century and continues as a centre of worship and community.
They also appreciate the warm and friendly welcome from the Festival's volunteer organisers and helpers, and the relaxed, informal atmosphere of our events.
Thaxted itself offers hospitality and refreshment, and many scenic picnic opportunities, so that there is nowhere better to enjoy a summer evening of music! Thaxted Festival is a truly local festival, which is appreciated by those close to us as well as by visitors who come from further afield each year.
