Cherry Hinton Res 2 : 0 Thaxted Rangers

Once again Thaxted travelled with a large numbers of absentees to soon to  be promoted Cherry Hinton at the weekend in what was to be a very entertaining game.

From start to finish Thaxted gave as good as they got and pushed Cherry Hinton all the way.

Youth was once again given the opportunity, with three players from the U16 squad playing, including an impressive debut from Austen Domin.

The home side took the lead when Lee Northfield added to his 42 goals from 22 games with a chipped free kick from what appeared an impossible angle.

This did not deter the visitors who continued to cause the Cherry Hinton defence problems, particularly runs from the left from Charlie Daniels, Wayne Perry came closest with a free kick from the edge of the area.

However, right on half time, a sucker punch, Lee Northfield broke clear down the right and crossed for the ball to be bundled into the net.

In the second half, Thaxted continued to play bright counter attacking football and as the half wore on the pressure increased causing frantic defending from the home side.

You sensed if Thaxted could nick a goal, then there could be a real grandstand finale, however it was not to be and Cherry Hinton missed the opportunity to go further in front when Junior saved a penalty.

This was Thaxted’s best performance in a number of weeks, which hopefully they can take into their final fixture at home to Abington this weekend.
