Essex Mediation
Conflict Resolution

Mediation is a voluntary process intended to help those involved in family breakdown or conflict (e.g. divorcing or separating) to reach their own decisions about the future and to communicate better.

You and your ex-partner will meet together with a third person – a mediator who is there to support and guide your discussions. They will not take sides and will help the two of you organise and agree on your future.

Mediation has been proven to reduce some of the emotional stress involved in family conflict and relationship breakdown and can save unnecessary legal costs. It is not, however, a substitute for legal advice and clients are encouraged to consult solicitors when necessary.

Your mediator will guide you in making practical decisions, e.g. those relating to your finances, property and arrangements for children, in

order to help you reach the best outcomes for you and your family. Mediation is confidential except in circumstances where the mediator believes any adult or child could be at serious risk of harm.

At the beginning of the process you will be assessed for public funding. If you are eligible and have provided satisfactory evidence then mediation is FREE- and if you are referred by your solicitor under the funding code then your Mediation Information Assessment meeting (MIAM) is also FREE for you and your partner.

If you are not eligible for public funding our fee structure is based on your income. Essex Mediation is a not-for-profit organisation and our pricing is set in accordance with our ethos of fairness.
